Gabala lost 3:1 to Anderlecht (Belgium) in the Group C of the UEFA EL. This was the first leg of the Roman Grigorchuk side in their second successive experience of the group stage.
The home side started faster and the visitors pushed hard to absorb the pressure. With the further minutes into the game, Gabala got foothold in the proceedings and drew attention with counter attacks that seemed as a matter of time before Bagali Dabo missed his chance after coming very close to be one on one with the keeper.
Then Anderlecht opened the scoring when Sofian Hanni let the ball from Uros Spajic in the right meet Lukas Teodorczyk and the Poland fired in.
But the Belgian side could lap up for plaudits not for a long time as the red-black team fed back when Filip Ozobich failed to convert a pass from Ruslan Abishov into the goal and the returned ball found Dabo. The latter finished clinically – 1:1. Later on, the French player went too close to his double but he missed the target.
After leveling, the hosts looked unable to set up more threats and Gabala well worked into the home defense. But Anderlecht”s forward line popped up by counter attack surging up the field and Gabala”s Rafael Santos trying to pin into opponent exchange scored own goal.
After the interval, the Belgian team kept up the lead but Teodorczyk and Anni failed to hit the target from promising positions.
At times, Ozobic”s powerful shot past inches wide. And Bezotosniy gave some great saves to his teammates denying Stancu and Kipcu.
Another pulsating moment came up in the 74th minute when the Belgian side went close again to be one on one with the Ukrainian keeper, but an opponent footballer saw his effort cleared off.
And the hosts scored the third after Stancu cut through our defense and his cross found Diego Kapel shot in the wide open goal.
Right after the goal, Santos tried to make amend for his earlier error but his effort fizzed just wide of the post.
In the stoppage time, Dabo could have minimize the goal difference but he failed to come one on one with the keeper pounced on a loos ball.
