Today, Gabala have met Dinamo Tbilisi in the 1st match of the European League Qualifying Round in Georgia. Roman Grigorchuk”s squad started to the 2015/16 season with their second experience of the European championship.
Although the home side started faster, the first threat came out from Gabala with Rafael Santo”s pulsating shot after a corner by Arif Dashdamirov. The red-black team held on against the starting pressure of Dinamo Tbilisi before George Floresku kicked the ball from the opponent keeper after a corner in the 32nd minute. His shot was converted out by Dinamo”s defender.
Gabala could have opened the scoring with Ricardinho”s shot in the box passed the keeper before his defender deflected this from the open net.
And 2 minutes later, Aleksey Antonov went too close to breaking the deadlock but he failed to finish an inch-perfect shot by Urfan Abbasov to the box.
The game restarted by mutual attacks and developed into the red card picked up for Gvelesiani fouled on Sergey Zenyov in the 51st minute.
As the opponents went down to 10, Gabala stepped up their inroad into the Georgian defense, but the home side could stand clear with some changes. And the first goal on the show was scored by Cigauri on 65 minutes – 1:0.
To regain the momentum, Grigorchuk introduced Dodo and Rashad Sadigov that led to level with Javid Huseynov- 1:1. The goal was Gabala”s first-ever in the European League.
And 6 minutes left to the final whistle, Georgia lapped up the plaudits for their winner goal scored by Giorgi Papunashvili after meeting his keeper”s pass after attacking travel - 2:1.
