Gabala took 1:0 home victory on Sabah in the first tie of the season’s Azerbaijan Cup, joining the round of 8.

The pace of the match started by mutual attacks before Gabala Gabala’s dynamism gradually moved more into the game. It’s evident with some many threats in the other box. Tamkin Khalilzadeh set up James Adeniyi denied by the Sabah goal keeper. Then the latter telegraphed Rauf Aliyev headed over the woodwork. Later on, Steeven Monroze was denied by the post. The sustained pressure led to an own goal, just before the half-time, by Sabah’s Filip Ivanovic after his teammate capitalized on the ball from Gabala’s James Adeniyi – 1:0.

The visiting side looked faster after the restart but Sanan Gurbanov's red-black team regained the momentum again as Rauf Aliyev went too close to scoring in the 60th minute when failed to catch the ball in a promising position. Then Adeniyi’s powerful shot was deflected to a corner before a poor header by Monroze.

At times, Gabala keeper Dmytro Bezotosniy gave a great save to his teammates denying a pulsating shot by Milos Boshancic. Another effort by Steeven Monroze passed over the woodwork.

Now the pair are going to meet for the return match on Thursday.
