Today, the Topaz Premier League started to its second stage. After finishing 2-week break with national team matches, Gabala came up against Inter in away after beating them 3:2 at home.
The game started with mutual attacks and the red-black side went close to setting up threat by Nizami Hajiyev and Leonardo Da Silva in the earlier 10 minutes. But host Salahat Aghayev was clear. The first real threat arrived in the 15th minute when Vagif Javadov gave a strong shot near to the spot that could have opened the scoring but his ball was deflected by a Gabala defender.
The visitors could set up their first occasion on 33 minutes with Victor Mendy”s shot close to the box found Leonardo at the right with space. Having the pass, the latter fired right on the post.
In the 38th minute, Diego Costa gave a great save to his team denying Javadov off 12 meters after telegraph of Ruslan Amirjanov from the right.
Fouling on Aleksandr Iashvili, Daniel Subotic earned his second yellow since the season started. The Serbian player broke the deadlock of the show in the extra time of the half to gain his 3rd goal in the season with 30 meter range shot targeting into the gate corner. This allowed him to reach to Gabala”s most productive season players Mendy and Leonardo. He also put an end to the goalless streak of the last two matches.
The home side were expected to bounce on leveling but they were responded by counter attacks from the other end. Leonardo looked close to double the lead of Gabala, in the 52nd minute, but his powerful shot was off target.
Mendy came to be one on one with Inter”s keeper 8 minutes after the hour mark before failing to score. Later on, Nizami tried to size on mistake of the home keeper who came out much forward but Gabala player”s strike could not find the net.
Yuri Semin introduced Luis Hilario to step up the thing into the favor of Gabala. This helped the red-black squad build up 2 threats with Lorenso Ebecilio shooting from 19-meter post in the 15 minutes left, but he was denied by the woodwork. After shortly, Mendy was fastest than all to surged on the pass from the left to the gate side before his effort tipped wide of goal. In the 8th minute, Inter went too close to leveling in the 81st minute, when Ruslan Amirjanov failed to score before Bacana Skhadadze also unable shot home the returned ball. The latter failed again to sweep finish after the cross from Iashvili. With the 5 minutes left, Leonardo was substituted by Lorival Assis.
Throwing everything at the guests in the closing minutes, Inter gave some spaces on the back line. But Gabala held on with defense and did not drive any counter attacks.
Now beating Inter in Baku by 1:0, Gabala could break the away deadlock after winless away streak of all 11 matches.
