The both sides started with backs-to-the-wall display and mutual testing inroads at times, playing mostly in the middle of the pitch until the half-break. Simurg were very close to open the scoring on 14 minutes with Tofig Mikayilov”s goalbound shot that Pavel Doroshev denied clear.
Gabala forwards Victor Mendy and Dodo were toiling at the other end but they could not get through the home side”s astute defense. The last thread of the first half also was set up by Simurg as Anatoliy Dorosh”s punch fizzed just wide.
Gabala switched to more dynamic display as it was evident before 49th minute with Yannick Kamanan setting up Victor Mendy by superb telegraph, but the latter was off target. Jus a minute later, Mahir Shukurov made another trouble from the right as a sign of better display in the full second half by Gabala that led ours to open the scoring on 85 minutes. Substitute Deon Burton fed Mendy the ball to hit into the net – 1:0.
Two minutes later, Fith Kavlak”s men were very close to the second goal when Chertoganov took the ball from the home defense for Burton to be through one on one with the Simurg keeper, but the Jamaican kicked just wide. It was the last pulsating episode of the game that gifted Gabala a superior start to 2012.
