Gabala won on Sumgayit by 2:0 in the away match of the Azerbaijan Premier League’s 27th tour sealing at least silverware.
The home side started faster but Gabala held on. Roman Grigorchuk’s team gained momentum gradually going more into the game and set up their first threat with Famoussa Kone coming one-on-one with the keeper. Then Bagaliy Dabo failed to capitalize on a cross from Ilgar Gurbanov in the right. But the top scorer of the league could open the scoring kicking the return ball denied by a post after Steeven Monroze’s shot. This was registered as his 13th goal over the season.
After the restart, the hosts threw everything against the visiting side and were able to give trouble once again to Dmytro Bezotosniy.
As the opponent side looked focused on attacks, Gabal got some chances of counter attacks. At times, Dabo was fouled and Javid Huseynov’s shot was canceled by the opponent keeper. Monroz kicked for a 19-meter drive but saw his effort tipped wide. The latter’s next effort found Javid coming one-on-one with the keeper and the captain sealed in the 2:0 victory.
The result means Gabala hit the second league silver medals in a row after bronze medals in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16. This is also our fifth championship experience on the trot.
