Gabala won over MTK Budapest 2:1 in the away match of the 2nd Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League. The first tie of the stage was the first-ever experience of Azerbaijan facing any club from Hungary in the continental championship.

The game got underway by mutual attacks and the hosts set up the first threat with Barnabas Bese in the 4th minute. But Nika Kvekveskiri fed back 3 minutes later with a corner that found Bagali Dabo failing to score.

MTK Budapest gained a penalty chance on 14 minutes after Mirzabayov fouled on Daniel Gero. But Yozef Konto”s shot was denied by Dmyto Bezotosny.

After the failed penalty, Roman Grigorchuk”s team from Azerbaijan gained the momentum making some occasions with exchange of Dabo and Theo Weeks.

Foul by Gero led gifted a free-kick for Gabala shot by Nika opening the scoring in the 25th minute.

Later on, Filip Ozobic went too close to doubling Gabala”s lead before deflecting by the opponent defense.

It was the red-black visitors seeming faster after the restart. But the first threat of the period was set up by the hosts again with Bese”s powerful kick deflected by Bezotosny.

And Dabo troubled the MTK keeper on 63 minutes.

Three minutes later, Gabala doubled their lead after Ricardinho in the left set up Dabo deflecting the ball to Ozobia to fire in the goal.

After the goal, the hosts squared the ball with Darko Nikac being off the target. And Konto”s corner found Sandor Torgelle in the box headed in the het– 1:2.

Although some more efforts later, the goal was the last of the show.

The result left Gabala hitting their first-ever away win in the UEFA EL.

The return match is fixed to the next Thursday, July 21.
