Gabala are going to have their 2nd season experience in the UEFA EL play-off for the tally to the group stage as the red-black side have been drown against NK Maribor (Slovenia) in Nyon, Switzerland.
It is worth to notice that Gabala tested themselves against the opponents 2 year ago when we were at the training camp in Slovenia. The trial event had ended by 1:0 with the goal by our Rafael Santos.
NK Maribor was found on December 12, 1960. The rivals from Maribor host home matches at the Ljudski vrt Stadium built in 1952 with 12,702 seats.
The club”s history includes 2 periods: Yugoslavia and independent Slovenia perids of time.
They could develop to the domestic championship right from their first year of the history and hit the triumph.
They gained their Premier League debut in the first 1967/1968 season of the all 5 years in a row. But they could not break the deadlock to move up from the 10th place. Since then, they were unable to return back to the domestic top flight.
Maribor challenged against the difficulties up to 1988 when they started to collaboration with Branik company and changed their name to Maribor Branik.
After the country gained the independence in 1991, the team joined up with the Slovenia Premier League and have been keeping their foothold for for the last 25 years as one of the 3 clubs with the title in the country.
They finished runners-up their first season league season in 1991/1992 and have been holding on amongst the leaders.
After their further 12 domestic tittles, they possess:
13-time league champion rank: (1996/1997, 1997/1998, 1998/1999, 1999/2000, 2000/2001, 2001/2002, 2002/2003, 2008/2009, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015).
9 time domestic cup winner: (1991/1992, 1993/1994, 1996/1997, 1998/1999, 2003/2004, 2009/2010, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2015/2016),
4-time Supercup winner: (2009, 2012, 2013, 2014) qazanan komanda Sloveniyanın ən titullu klubu sayılır.
Keeping up their winning streak of 5 seasons, the Slovenian side could lift the cup last year, but then they are still unable to prevent their life-time opponents NK Olimpija Ljubljana from the gold medals. Maribor are going only 6 points behind their top opponents and ended as runners-up for their 5th experience.
Maribor took their Eurocup debut in the 1992/1993 season.
They could beat FC Hamrun Spartans (Malta - 4:0, 1:2) in the Cups Cup to bring Madrid Atletiko to Maribor – 0:3, 1:6.
They could reach up to the group stage of the Champions League for their first-ever in the 1999/2000.
But as they beat at least one stage every season up to this great achievement, then they suffered from the further deadlock on the first-leg of the contest for the next 4 years.
The Slovenian team stayed off the Eurocup contests for their first time in the season of 2005/06 for their poor quality football.
They could make their successful run go on again only after 2009.
Maribor lost the continental campaign in the last two season play-offs.
Maribor shown up in the group stage of the tournament in the 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 seasons. They could beat the group round, 3 years ago, before Sevilla stopped them in the round of 32 lineup by Sevilla – 2:2, 1:2.
The season of 2014/2015 brought the 2nd Champions League group experience to Maribor. But they were stopped again.
The next season, they were kicked out right after their first round.
Maribor joined up with the present EL season from the 2nd Qualifying Round beating Levski (Bulgaria - 0:0, 1:1) and then Aberdin (Scotland - 1:0, 1:1).
Gabala”s opponents possess 49 wins in their all 136 Eurocup appearances, following 32 draws and 55 losses. They scored 176 goals and conceded 198.
